How to Improve Your Academic Writing in English: A Guide for University Students

2 min read

Academic writing is the skill many university students find hardest, because it needs correct English, organised thinking and a style different from everyday writing. The good news is that it can be learned in clear steps.

Start with the paragraph before the essay

A good academic paragraph has a fixed structure:

  1. A topic sentence that presents the main idea.

  2. Supporting sentences that explain and give evidence or examples.

  3. A concluding sentence that links the idea back to your argument.

Once you master the paragraph, an essay becomes a series of organised paragraphs between an introduction and a conclusion.

Features of academic style

  • Objective: based on evidence, not personal opinion alone.

  • Precise: uses specific vocabulary instead of general words like thing and good.

  • Formal: avoids contractions such as don't and informal language.

  • Cohesive: uses linking words such as however, therefore and in addition.

Citing and referencing

Any idea from another source needs a reference, even if you paraphrase it. Learn the referencing system your university requires, such as APA or Harvard, and paraphrase rather than copy to avoid plagiarism.

Common mistakes among Arabic-speaking students

  • Very long sentences influenced by Arabic writing style.

  • Literal translation of expressions.

  • Repeating the same idea in different words.

  • Skipping revision and proofreading before submission.

A simple routine for improvement

  1. Read a short academic article in your field each week and notice its structure.

  2. Write one paragraph a day about your subject.

  3. Get feedback from a teacher who explains your mistakes, not just corrects them.

At London College UK we offer a Basic Academic Writing course and an Advanced Academic Writing and Research course for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
