How to Prepare for a Job Interview in English with Confidence

2 min read

An interview in English doesn't only test your language; it tests whether you can explain your experience clearly and confidently. The good news is that most questions are predictable, so practising your answers out loud will help you walk in calmer.

The most common questions

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • Why do you want to work here?

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?

  • Tell me about a challenge you faced at work and how you dealt with it.

  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

How to build a strong answer

Use the STAR method for experience and situation questions:

  1. Situation: the context, briefly.

  2. Task: what you were asked to do.

  3. Action: what you did, specifically.

  4. Result: the outcome, with numbers if possible.

This structure keeps you from rambling and makes your achievement clear.

Phrases that help during the interview

  • Could you repeat the question, please? when you didn't hear it clearly.

  • That's a good question. Let me think for a moment. to buy a few seconds.

  • In my previous role, I was responsible for... to introduce your experience.

A one-week preparation plan

  1. Write short answers to the common questions, then practise them aloud rather than memorising word for word.

  2. Record yourself and listen to your pronunciation and pauses.

  3. Research the company and prepare two questions to ask at the end.

  4. Do a mock interview with a teacher or colleague who gives honest feedback.

Mistakes that weaken your impression

  • Memorising long answers and reciting them unnaturally.

  • Apologising repeatedly for your English.

  • General answers with no examples from your experience.

At London College UK we practise interviews with you in our English courses for adults, with mock interviews and individual feedback.

Frequently asked questions

No. Memorise the key ideas and examples, and speak naturally.

Politely ask for it to be repeated; that's better than an unrelated answer.

A week of short daily practice makes a clear difference if your level is intermediate.
