A 4-Week IELTS Study Plan: Week by Week

2 min read

Four weeks is short, but it is often enough to raise your IELTS score by half a band or a full band if you are close to your target and know exactly where you lose marks. If the gap is bigger, build your English first and then train for the test.

Before you start: is a short plan right for you?

  • Take one full practice test under real timing.

  • Compare your result with the required score in each skill, not just overall.

  • If the gap is half a band to one band, this plan fits. If it is bigger, start with a longer plan.

Week 1: diagnosis and the marking criteria

Read the Writing and Speaking criteria: task achievement, coherence, vocabulary and grammar. Then sort the mistakes from your practice test: do you lose marks through time, understanding or the language itself? That tells you where to spend the next three weeks.

Week 2: Reading and Listening

Practise each question type separately, especially True / False / Not Given and matching headings in Reading, and form completion in Listening. Do one full section a day, then review every wrong answer and write down why you got it wrong.

Week 3: Writing and Speaking

Write at least one task a day, alternating between the chart description and the essay. Most important: have a teacher mark it and explain the band. For Speaking, record your answers to all three parts and listen back for hesitation and repeated errors.

Week 4: full tests and review

Take two or three full timed tests, and spend the day after each one reviewing mistakes. Study lightly in the last two days and sleep well before test day.

How many hours a day?

Two to three focused hours a day with regular feedback beats six scattered hours with no review. In a short plan, consistency is what makes the difference.

Mistakes that waste time

  • Memorising writing templates without understanding the question.

  • Doing many practice tests without reviewing each mistake.

  • Skipping Speaking because it "doesn't need study".

Frequently asked questions

Usually by half a band to one band, if you are close to your target and practise daily with regular feedback.

Three to four full tests over the plan, with careful review of every mistake.

Both work if your writing and speaking are properly corrected. In person suits people who need more structure; online suits busy schedules.
