IELTS or ALCPT for Jobs: Which Should You Take?

1 min read

IELTS and ALCPT both measure English, but they serve different paths. Choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money.

What each test is for

  • IELTS: widely used for university admission, professional registration and immigration, and accepted by many employers.

  • ALCPT: an English placement test developed by the US Defense Language Institute, used mainly by military organisations for training and assignments.

How they differ

  • Skills: IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking; ALCPT is multiple-choice listening and reading.

  • Scores: IELTS uses bands from 0 to 9; ALCPT is scored out of 100.

  • Recognition: IELTS is broadly recognised internationally; ALCPT is specific to military contexts.

How to choose

  1. Ask your employer or training body which test they require and the score needed.

  2. For military courses and assignments, ALCPT is usually the requirement.

  3. For civilian jobs, study or work abroad, IELTS is usually the safer choice.

Preparing for each

  • ALCPT: vocabulary, fast listening and timed multiple-choice practice.

  • IELTS: all four skills, with feedback on writing and speaking.
