What IELTS Score Do You Need for University and Scholarships?

2 min read

There is no single IELTS score that fits everyone. The university, the subject and the scholarship provider set the number, and they often set a minimum for each skill too. So the first step is to know your exact requirement and then build your plan around it.

Common score ranges

  • Bachelor's degrees: many universities ask for 6.0 to 6.5 overall.

  • Master's and postgraduate study: a common requirement is 6.5 to 7.0.

  • Higher-requirement subjects: such as medicine, law and teaching, which may ask for 7.0 or more with high minimums in Writing and Speaking.

These ranges are only for planning. The official admissions page of the programme or the scholarship's own rules are always the reference.

Don't look at the overall score alone

Many students reach the overall score and are turned down because their Writing score is below the minimum. For each university, note the overall score, the minimum per skill and the test version required (usually IELTS Academic for study).

How to set your target score

  1. Collect the requirements of every university or scholarship you will apply to.

  2. Take the highest overall score and the highest minimum per skill among them.

  3. Add a half-band safety margin if time allows, since test-day performance can vary.

  4. Take a full practice test to see the gap between your level and the target.

How long will it take?

It depends on the gap. Half a band can take a few weeks of focused practice, while a band and a half or more usually needs months of building the language itself. Start early enough to allow a retake before your deadline.

Watch the validity period

Most institutions accept IELTS results within two years of the test date, so time your test so the result is still valid when your admission is processed.

At London College UK we measure your current level and the gap to your target, then build a preparation plan around it. See our IELTS preparation course in Kuwait.
