TOEFL for University Admission: Scores and Preparation in 2026
If your university asks for TOEFL, practising questions is not enough. You need to understand the required score on the right scale and know what changed in the test. This guide covers what you need from registration to test day.
What changed in TOEFL iBT in January 2026?
Reading and Listening are now adaptive: question difficulty changes with your performance.
A new 1–6 score scale in half-band steps, aligned with CEFR levels.
For two years, score reports also show a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale.
The test is shorter, and the sections run Reading, Listening, Writing, then Speaking.
How to read your university's requirement
Many universities still list requirements on the old scale, such as 80, 90 or 100. During the transition both scores appear on your report, but also check the minimum for each section, since some programmes set a specific Writing or Speaking score.
Test centre or at home?
You can take the TOEFL iBT at an official test centre or at home with the Home Edition and a remote proctor. Before choosing home, confirm your university accepts it and that you have a quiet room, a suitable computer and a stable connection that meet the technical requirements.
A preparation plan for each section
Reading: read academic texts daily and practise following paragraph structure and main ideas, not hunting for matching words.
Listening: listen to short lectures and take organised notes: main idea, examples and the speaker's view.
Writing: practise typing quickly and accurately, and writing a structured reply to an academic discussion.
Speaking: record timed answers and listen back to improve clarity and organisation.
Common mistakes
